The main difference between these two file types is that pst-files are being used for “actual” storage and ost-files are being used for “cached” storage. In the case of the last, the “actual” copy will remain on the mail server and any local changes that you make or new item that you create are also synched to the mail server. PST files are used for archiving and backup purposes, while OST files are used for offline access to data stored on an Exchange server. OST files are stored on the user's computer and synchronise changes with the server, while PST files can be stored locally or remotely and do not support synchronisation. PST files can be moved to the local computer, while OST files are synchronized individually using a server. PST files support uploads to other email services, but OST files cannot be moved to other services except it's converted. OST files are encrypted with MAPEntryID GUID key and require authentication from linked MAPI profile, while PST files are importable and can be easily accessed through any Outlook profile.
